Watershed Management - Waskesiu River outflow - May 26, 2005

CPS Chairperson Lyle Bolen has been actively involved in joint talks with PANP Asset Management Advisor Michael Caswell, and Acting Superintendent Carla Flaman, about the apparent flow of water over the Waskesiu River dam this spring, and the numbers being used to explain how outflow is being measured and controlled by both PANP and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

CPS representatives are set to meet with PANP and DFO representatives on Wednesday June 1, 1:30 p.m. at the dam site, to discuss the information provided by PANP and DFO personnel, some of which has led to confusion and misunderstanding. Anyone interested in attending and listening to this discussion is welcome. (For an update on this meeting, click on this link once you have finished reading the background.)

CPS concern is focused on understanding how the lake level is being affected by current restrictions imposed by DFO on water storage by PANP in Waskesiu Lake, and by required volumes of water that must be released downstream depending on outflow. These guidelines and requirements have immediate and ongoing direct impact on the level of Waskesiu Lake, and on the eventual level of the lake once the existing control structure is replaced by a fixed-crest riffle.
